I would love to specialize in gynaecology

I’m 16 years old and confused about what I should take up after Std XII. I would love to specialize in gynaecology. What are the requirements/qualifications to become a gynaecologist? Is it possible to write an entrance exam without going for coaching? F so, how can I prepare by myself for the exam?

OB/GYN specialists are doctors who focus solely on women. This field is particularly appealing because it allows you to maintain an interest in both medicine and surgery. You can develop expertise in the most sophisticated, technically demanding procedures if you choose.

You need many years of education to become an OB/GYN specialist. First, clear 10+2 examination with Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Then appear in a competitive exam to get admission into M.B.B.S. (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery). This is a five and a half-year course which includes a one-year internship period as well. After that you can go for M.D. in Gynaecology.

It is certainly not necessary to go for coaching classes. These just guide you, but it is you who have to work hard. First get your concepts clear, understand all the topics of XI and XII NCERT. Do the last five years entrance test papers to get a full insight into the pattern of the papers. Normally, in these exams, the emphasis is on conceptual questions. So, you should practice for questions based on diagrams given in NCERT text and concepts. Be confident and prepare well. Wish you all the best.

I want to take up Microbiology as a career.

I am a student of Std X (Science) and want to take up Microbiology as a career. I want to know whether PCB or PCM or PCMB (ISC) would prove to be a better option. I am also in search of information required about the competitive exams that are necessary for studying microbiology abroad (after 12th) because of less scope for microbiology in India. And please give me some information or steps to be taken for preparation for microbiology study.

Microbiology is the study of small living organisms that cannot be seen with the naked eyes. These microorganisms are an integral part of the human environment and they are present everywhere. Some of them are yeasts, viruses, protozoa, moulds, bacteria and algae.

Many colleges Bachelor of Science in Microbiology as a three-year course. Eligibility is 10+2 with physics, chemistry and biology. Generally, admission for B.Sc. (Microbiology) programme is on the basis of marks obtained in 10+2. The better the college is, higher the cut-off percentage goes.

Those with B.Sc. degrees may work as technologists in government or industrial laboratories. They are usually assigned such tasks as doing diagnostic or quality control testing in laboratories, in industry or in teaching and applied research institutions. Opportunities for advancement are limited for graduates. Those who have M.Sc. degrees may work as professionals in quality control in industry, and those who have Ph.D.s may conduct research and teach in universities or manage hospital (clinical) diagnostic microbiology laboratories. Possible avenues of advancement for advancement for microbiologists are many, especially for those with a doctoral degree.

I want to make a career in Psychology but I don’t know about its scope in Dehra Dun and Delhi. Please guide me.

A psychology degree opens up a wide range of career opportunities. Psychology graduates have knowledge of the assessment of personality, intelligence and attitudes, interviewing techniques, questionnaire design and analysis, child development, and methods of teaching and learning. This knowledge can be applied to an enormous number of occupations and profession like market research, social work, personnel management and career guidance. They may also be involved in investigations such as crime detection and lie detection.

You need at least a Master’s degree for professional work in which you might administer and interpret psychological tests, counsel college students with educational or emotional problems, or help the handicapped find suitable training and employment. Some firms employ their own psychologists who are always on the lookout to improve methods of training, working conditions, method of salesmanship, etc.

With a doctorate’s degree, they can qualify for more responsible research and counseling positions in hospitals, clinics and other health facilities. Research psychologists examine the behaviour of individuals in order to understand and explain how and why they act as they do.

The work of a psychologist should not be confused with that of the psychiatrist who are medical practitioners specializing in the prevention and cure of psychological disorders. The training of a psychiatrist usually takes a much different track when compared with psychologists.

I’m a student of Std X. I want to be a paediatrician. What steps should I take to pursue this?

Becoming a paediatrician or a child specialist requires 5-6 years of training beyond an MBBS degree. First, clear 10+2 examination with Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Then appear in a competitive exam to get admission into MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery). This is a 5 ½ year course which includes a one-year internship period as well.

After MBBS, you should go for 2 years PG Diploma for 3 years M.D. in Paediatrics. The selection of a candidate for PG courses is done through entrance examinations. After completion of M.D./M.S., it is better to study further and do a super specialization.

Admissions for 100% seats of MBBS/BDS in various medical/dental colleges, except AIIMS and JIPMER Puducheery, is done through the common entrance test called NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test). This year, NEET was conducted on 7 May 2017.

Pediatricians need the same skills other specialists do, such as good communication skills, problem-solving and critical thinking. But they also need to have an extra level of understanding when working with children.

Your aptitude

Is there any aptitude test for school-going kids, which can help parents decide what is the best career path for the child? At what age can such tests be taken? Can the aptitude clearly lay down an appropriate career like medical, engineering, management, civil services, etc? Or is the test general in nature? Also, apropos the article on homeopathy in May issue, what is the duration of BHMS? What is the maximum age at which one can take admission to a BHMS course?

Yes, school students are being administered a psychometric test, to help them realize their true potential. In classes IX and X, usually the level at which schools and counseling groups start administrating the test, the objective is to guide a student about the stream he should choose after class X, so that a student who is just not fit for sciences and is under peer and family influence, does not end up taking physics or biology that will ruin his studies. In class XI and XII the psychometric test guides a student about what types of career/jobs is the person suited for. The tests ask a whole lot of questions, and accordingly assess a person’s interest, aptitude and personality. They go a step ahead in preparing a road map for students – that is, what subject they should pursue after XII to fulfill their dream. These tests, rather than pinpointing a specific career, point a range of allied fields one can take up. Say, creative writing, journalism, advertising and electronic media are good options for those with strong linguistic skills.

Regarding your second question, the bachelor’s course in homeopathy is a 5 ½ year course, including one-year internship.

NEET Exam

I have appeared for the standard X Board exams and hope to study science and clear the MBBS entrance exam. Please tell me how to prepare for the various prestigious medical entrance exams. Should I join a NEET preparatory coaching class?

Start preparing for the medical entrance examination right after standard X. you need to equip yourself with the textbooks of classes XI and XII, a few extra theory books (for that extra edge)and MCQ (multiple choice questions) books. Students worry about studying simultaneously for medicine and the Board exams will harm their Board results. These fears are unfounded. After all, mastering the CBSE course means that you have cracked 70 to 80 per cent of the NEET. It is only the remaining 20 to 30 per cent that requires extra work through the help of additional books. So how do you go about preparing for a medical entrance exam? Well, choose a topic. Read about it in the CBSE textbook. Then study the topic with the help of additional theory books to enlarge your knowledge base.

At the end of the exercise, solve the multiple choice questions. Even if you have perfected the standard XI fundamentals, revise them during the summer holidays preceding class XII and during all holidays. This will reduce the pressure in the crucial last one month between the class XII exams and the NEET. Don’t start off with the additional theory books. Self-study is advocated to avoid wastage of time and energy. In case you feel the need for extra coaching either through regular class or correspondence, choose the institute with care and caution. Enquire about the institute’s faculty and performance and speak to former and current students of that institute.

Adopt a systematic and rigorous study regime. What is needed is a virtual combing operation. Leave nothing to doubt or luck. Leave no topic untouched and no MCQ unsolved.
