Meaning: The word prospect denotes the possibility or likelihood of some future event occurring. It can also refer to a person regarded as likely to succeed.

Origin: The word, which has been around since early in the 15th Century, is derived from the Latin word prospectus meaning “distant view, look out. The sense of “person or thing considered promising” is much more recent and has been in use since 1922.

Even though the word has been around for a long time, it has continued to enjoy popularity in the last 200 years or so.

Usage: The prospects of the two new candidates in the election are looking good after their latest round of campaigning.

Meaning: An appendage is something that is joined to or connected with something larger or more important.

Origin: The word is a combination of append + age. Append has been in use since the late 14th Century to mean “to belong to as a possession or right, from Old French word apendr. A word-forming element in nouns of act process, function, condition, etc., age is derived from the Old French word -age.

Example: The elephant’s trunk is a unique form of appendage.

Meaning: This adjective refers to getting pleasure from food and drink of high quality.

Origin: Around since the late 14th Century, it means “follower of the philosophical system of Epicurus”, from Old French Epicurien, or from epicure +-ian. From 1570s, as “one devoted to pleasure”. As an adjective, attested from 1580s in the philosophical sense and 1640s with the meaning “pleasure-loving”

Usage: An epicurean banquet of exquisitely prepared food.

Meaning: The word respite refers to a short period of rest or relief from something that is difficult or unpleasant.

Origin: The word has been around since the mid-13th Century and is derived from Old French respit, from Latin respectus.

While the usage of the word reduced in the 20th Century, it has picked up since then and is enjoying decent popularity these days.

Usage: A packed schedule with plenty of deliveries implies that even short respites are a rarity for most delivery partners.

Meaning: The word dexterity corresponds to skilfully doing something. It is especially used to denote the skilful usage of hands to carry out a task.

Origin: The word has been around since the 16th Century, maybe as early as the 1520s. It is derived from the French word dexterite, from Latin dexteritatem meaning “readiness, skilfulness”. Even though the word has been around for over 500 years now, its popularity has been tapering. Its usage steadily declined from 1800s onwards, but has stabilised over the last century.

Usage: Introducing infants to blocks helps them improve their manual dexterity.

WHAT IS THE MEANING, ORIGIN AND USAGE OF WORD ‘GRAPEVINE’?

Meaning: This noun has two meanings. It refers to the climbing plant that grapes grow on, and also to an informal way in which information is shared in a group of people.

Origin: In use since the 14th Century to refer to the grape plant, from the Old French word vigne meaning vine, vineyard. Used to refer to rumour since the 19th Century, from the use of “grapevine telegraph” as “secret source of information and rumor in the American Civil War.

Usage: Grapevine has it that she’s quit her job.
