Why the Neuschwanstein castle is called the fairy tale castle?

The Neuschwanstein castle in Bavaria, Germany is a renowned tourist destination in Europe. The castle was built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria in honour of the composer Richard Wagner. King Ludwig had been a great admirer of Wagner. Many rooms in the castle have been inspired by Wagner’s characters.

Though the construction of the castle began in 1868, it remained unfinished. It was supposed to be King Ludwig’s home but unfortunately, he passed away in 1886. Following the king’s death, the palace was opened to the public. Biopics about King Ludwig, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and The Great Escape are some of the popular movies which featured this castle.

Though not yet designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it has been recommended by the German government for inclusion.
