WHAT IS THE MEANING, ORIGIN, AND USAGE OF THE WORD ‘GUTTED’?

Meaning : The word gutted is used to convey the sense of being severely disappointed or upset when used as an adjective.

It can also be used as a verb to denote removing the intestines or other internal organs from an animal before cooking it.

This meaning has also led to the meaning of removing or destroying completely the internal parts of some structure, like a building.

Origin : The meaning “abdomen, belly” is associated with gut (the verb form gutted is past tense of gut) from late in the 14th Century. The sense of “inside contents of anything” is from 1570s. The figurative use “plunder the contents of’ is by 1680s.

Usage : Australia’s Test skipper Pat Cummins said he was “gutted” to be ruled out just hours before the second Ashes Test against England.
