We’re all different. We all have different interests. Some of us love to doodle aimlessly or read books all say; others love to perform experiments or write a diary, play outdoors or learn how to cook, make all sorts of paper planes or create comic strips! But there are always more ‘important’ things that have to be done first (like homework!) and what we really want to do (not homework!) always takes a backseat.
Don’t lose heart. It happens to each one of us. Like they say, ‘so much to do and so little time!’ And that will always be the case. There will always be more things we want to do in life than the time we have. We need to learn how to deal with it. We need to prioritize what is more important for us.
Treat the time you have with respect because it never ceases to stop. Once you are home from school, freshen up, have a hearty snack, and spend time with your mother who is all ears to know how your day has been. Try and finish your school work for the next day before you do anything else. Because, believe it or not, once that’s out of the way, you’re free to do whatever you like!
If you’re attending classes for something you love to do – music, art, martial arts, swimming, tennis, robotics, etc. by all means, go ahead and enjoy them. Don’t treat them as a chore because you are doing something you like. But if you feel like you’re dragging yourself to that class and doing it only because others are doing it, think again! Ask yourself – Am I enjoying it? Is it worth my time? Would I do this more than anything else in the world? Is it making me happy?
If the answer is yes, you’re doing great!
If the answer is no, make a change. Do what you love.
You’re not quitting – you’re only saving the time you would have spent doing something you never liked in the first place. You’re making a choice for yourself. Not everyone has the same interests. Not everyone is good at the same thing. Not everyone wants to take grow up.
We need palaeontologists. We need artists. We need chefs. We need actors. We need farmers and entrepreneurs and architects and doctors and engineers and scientists and forest officers environmentalists. The list of things you can be in simply endless!
Sometimes, from friends, from teachers, to follow the herd and do what they think is important. But it’s your future and you know yourself best!
So, don’t beat yourself up if you don’t like chess or robotics is not your thing. Don’t doubt yourself if you love to cook more than you love physics or if you live art more than you math. Like Dr Seuss said, ‘There no one in this world that’s youer than you!’
Life is not always about end goals and destinations. It’s about being happy. And nothing but happy!
