What is it that makes some people develop voracious appetites and some to peck on their food?

Researchers from Imperial College, London, have now unravelled a gene called GAD2 that increases production of a chemical, which boosts an individual’s appetite. The research paper published in the Public Library of Science Biology says that the gene might be the cause for obesity in about one in 10 seriously overweight people. The study on more than 1200 people led to the discovery of two forms of the gene. One protected against obesity, the other that stimulated the appetite. Thinner volunteers were found to be more likely to carry the protective form of the gene, while the other version was more common in obese people.
