Mummy’s secret is out

How Egyptians managed to keep the mummies last for thousands of years?

German researchers have discovered the key preservative used in the embalming process of the mummies. The technology used by scientists was gas-chromatography. Ulrich Weser of Tuebingen University, Germany and colleagues, found the presence of the preservative chemical called guaiacol and other components normally found in cedar oil in the mummies.

The wood of the cedar tree is chopped and put into ovens and heated by fire packed all round. The first liquid that exudes flows like water down a pipe; in Syria this is called ‘cedar-juice,’ and it is so strong that in Egypt it is used for embalming the bodies of the dead. The cedar oil extraction process was already described in A.S. 77 by Roman encyclopedist Pliny the Elder.
